No, although Otterbein is faith-based and associated with the United Methodist Church, we welcome residents of all faiths and beliefs.

No, Otterbein provides an array of payment options, including a standard month-to-month rental fee with no required upfront investment. In no situation does Otterbein require you to turn over any of your existing assets, including your current home.

Otterbein lifestyle counselors will work with you and present data from an external financial consultant to help you determine which payment option is best for you. The following three options are commonly available at our communities and life plan communities:
- Monthly rental fee, with no upfront payment
- A pre-determined entrance fee that is fully refundable
- A Refundable Life Use Fee (RLUF) with a lower monthly rental fee and a declining refund balance

Otterbein is a leading non-profit senior living organization in the U.S., operating for over 110 years. It has received an “A” investment rating (2025) from Standard and Poor’s (S&P), a rating few other non-profits hold, demonstrating its stability and financial security.

The monthly rental fee includes virtually all of the independent living services you would ordinarily fund — rent, interior and exterior maintenance (including all appliances), security, some transportation, and access to numerous activities and services. Some communities include meal plans, while others offer meals at reasonable prices.

Does the monthly fee increase significantly each year?
Otterbein is a non-profit organization, but unfortunately, it is still subject to typical inflationary cost increases. Annual rental fee increases typically range from zero to three percent, but feel free to ask your Otterbein contact for the recent fee increase history in your community of choice.

Do I have to switch doctors if I move to Otterbein?
Most residents prefer to continue with their current doctors, with whom they have established trusting relationships. However, for added convenience, many Otterbein SeniorLife Communities offer onsite medical directors and clinic services, making it easier to access healthcare. Additionally, we have established connections with hospitals and doctors in the local community.

Our specially trained partners (employees) utilize Milestones to ensure that residents experiencing cognitive decline, such as Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia, receive high-quality care with engaging and purposeful programming.

Absolutely, and our Otterbein lifestyle counselors are ready to help you coordinate your move.
Otterbein recognizes that meals are critical to a long and enjoyable life. You’ll have plenty of dining options. All independent living residences include fully equipped kitchens for personal meal preparation, and many communities feature full-service restaurants with daily menus and nutritious, chef-prepared dishes. Additionally, residents can participate in holiday and themed special events and activities, offering an array of festive foods.

Does Otterbein allow pets?
Pets are allowed in most of our independent living homes and villas, typically including cats, dogs, birds, and fish, as long as the resident ensures they are safe and on leashes in common areas. Pets are allowed in some independent living apartments, but policies vary by community.

Yes, and many Otterbein residents are veterans. Contact the Otterbein lifestyle counselor at your preferred location if you need assistance applying for benefits or have any questions.

What will a typical week be like if I move to Otterbein?
