Preparing for a Move to Senior Living: Q&A with Otterbein St. Marys

Making the decision to move to a senior living community and then preparing to make that move can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The team at Otterbein St. Marys is here to help you in the decision-making and moving process. Follow our Q&A below for answers to common questions and concerns about transitioning to senior living.

Q: I’ve made the decision to move to a senior living community, but I’m feeling anxious about the process. How can the staff help me?

A: First of all, congratulations on making this decision — it’s a major life event, so you should feel good about planning for your future. It’s normal to feel anxious about the process because there are many steps and decisions to make.

However, rest assured that you’re not alone. Our team at Otterbein St. Marys is here to listen to and identify your individual needs. Once those needs have been identified, we will connect you with our staff, or partners as they’re commonly referred to here, to help and support you.

Q: I don’t even know where to begin with packing. How do I get started?

A: Packing and downsizing are emotionally and physically demanding tasks — and typically big ones at that! Here at Otterbein St. Marys, we partner with trusted professionals in the community and abroad —  if you reside outside of the area — who will visit your home and  assess what you have. They will help you identify what to bring to your new home.

Following this consultation, we can arrange for a packing service to ensure all your belongings are lovingly and safely packaged for your move. This service has proven invaluable for so many of our residents because the downsizing and moving process can often be the most challenging part.

Q: I’ve been feeling a bit lonely. Will moving to your community help me find and form new friendships?

A: Many older adults, especially those who live alone, often struggle to maintain friendships and sometimes feel lonely. One of the greatest benefits of moving to a senior living community is no longer being alone. You’ll be surrounded by a community of residents, partners, and volunteers that often quickly feels like family.

Otterbein St. Marys empowers residents by providing the means to form friendships, try new activities, and plan volunteer opportunities. Our mission is to be emotionally supportive, help each resident feel joy in their everyday lives, and live life to the fullest.

Q: My life circumstances seem different from those of others. How can you provide support to me?

A: We all have experienced a lifetime of different journeys, and each of us has unique experiences when it comes to deciding to move to a senior living community. But we’ve found that those differences tend to fade away, revealing a common goal we all share to lead a fulfilling life.

We encourage you to set up an appointment with our team to talk through your questions, circumstances, and hopes and dreams. Our promise to you is to be supportive and encouraging, ensuring that you make the right decision for yourself.
