A brand-new skilled nursing small house, Cornerstone Cottage, is coming to Otterbein Marblehead SeniorLife in summer 2020. Learn more about Cornerstone Cottage and our small house model here.
What is a Small House?
Otterbein’s Small Houses are homes that house 10 residents – whom we call elders – each. Each elder has a private room and bath and receives skilled care that’s tailored specifically to them.
Elders are free to set their own schedules, choose when and what to eat, entertain visitors, attend activities, and more. In fact, Betty Fischer, an elder at another one of our small houses, said, “It’s just like being at home. Life is not really much different for me than before I came here.”
Family members of elders have also told us that a small house feels very different from a traditional nursing home.
“One of the things I love about my father being here is that it’s so non-institutional,” said Ramona Anderson, daughter of an Otterbein Small House elder. “His laundry is done separately; his medicine is kept in a cabinet in his room. He is known by his caregivers.”
Cornerstone Cottage will be the second small house on the Marblehead campus; the other, called the Jane Baker House, was our first such model and is home to our short-term rehabilitation and therapy residents.
What Skilled Nursing Services Are Offered at Cornerstone Cottage?
Currently under construction and slated to be open for move-in during summer 2020, Cornerstone Cottage will offer elders a modern, home-like environment.
“We say Small House, Big Difference, because it’s a polar opposite of traditional long-term skilled nursing. It’s a welcoming home,” said Jennifer Lenthe, LNHA, executive director at Otterbein Marblehead. “We’re excited to have a home that will serve the long-term skilled nursing needs of elders as well as elders needing advanced memory support.”
A high staff-to-elder ratio at our small homes ensures elders always have access to a helping hand if they need it. There’s also an emergency call system in each room. Medication administration and any skilled or therapeutic care are available in-house.
Another special feature of Otterbein Small Houses the is center of the home – the hearth. Surrounding the fireplace in each home, you’ll find a comfortable living area for elders, family, and friends to gather.
There’s also a single long table for family-style meals. Elders are encouraged to provide their own favorite recipes for their neighbors and guests to share at mealtime.
