When Cynda “Cindy” E. decided to retire from her nursing career in Ohio four years ago, she discovered something special at Otterbein Franklin in Indiana — a vibrant community that offers both independence and connection.

The Freedom to Choose Your Retirement

“You can be busy here 24/7,” says Cindy E., an Otterbein Franklin resident. “It depends on you and what you want to do. It kind of just gives you the freedom to decide what I want to do. This is my retirement.”

This freedom of choice is what drew Cindy to Otterbein Franklin, along with another practical consideration: location. With family spread between Ohio and Indiana, she and her sister found the perfect middle ground. “My brother-in-law is from Indiana. They wanted someplace between my kids and his niece,” shares Cindy.

Family Bonds in a Community Setting

One of the unique aspects of Cindy’s experience is that she moved in alongside family members. “My sister, brother-in-law, and I all moved in together. They have their own place, and I have my own as well,” adds Cindy. “And it just makes it nicer having family here.”

The sisters, who are just 14 months apart in age, maintain their close bond while enjoying their independence in a community setting. “We are together almost every day. We talk every day,” says Cindy.

A Welcoming Community Culture

According to Cindy, what truly makes Otterbein Franklin special is the warmth of its residents. “People are very friendly here, and all my neighbors and everything.”

Likewise, Cindy has embraced this welcoming spirit herself, being a self-described “people person,” she greets newcomers with homemade treats. “When we get new people here, I try to bake them cookies or something similar.”

Staying Active and Engaged

Otterbein Franklin provides a variety of amenities and opportunities for connection and purpose. Cindy and her sister both volunteer in the community’s library, combining their love of reading with service to their neighbors.

“We have a really nice library here at Otterbein. I have really enjoyed it,” says Cindy. The campus also offers a clubhouse with an indoor pool, a greenhouse, an art studio, a fishing pond, a tennis court, and more. Activities, outings, and special events are planned throughout the year to keep residents engaged and active.

“I think they should just come in, take a look, take a walk around, and talk to some of the people that live here,” adds Cindy. “Come join us. Come and join us!”
