It’s a question we get from nearly everyone who’s considering making a move. We spent a day with Steve T., a resident at Otterbein SeniorLife, to get a firsthand perspective.

Life in Assisted Living at Otterbein
What brought you to assisted living at Otterbein?
“I was healthy until I was 60. I was living on my own and had my own place; I was driving; everything. One day, I became unconscious … [and eventually] ended up at Otterbein.
“And since I’ve been here, it’s been wonderful. There are so many opportunities for everybody. You just have to make those what you want. There’s more than enough that you have to pick and choose.
“And that’s the beauty of Otterbein; there is so much for everyone from age 55 on up to 100. And the people here are wonderful; all the different age groups. It’s amazing to be able to see that spread of ages from 60 up to 101. I sit with a lady who’s 101, and you’d think she’s 80.”
What do you enjoy most about Otterbein?
“Here we have everything. We’ve got the post office, we’ve got our church, we’ve got a bank on campus. Everything’s here. It’s wonderful.”
What has Otterbein done for your daily life?
“If you’re inactive in the public community, what other things do you have to get you motivated? There aren’t as many things like that out there. I was involved in the church choir before coming here, but I was not in the same leadership capacity as I am here. And I probably would never have done that, but this brought it all out for me here.
“And I believe Otterbein is the reason I’m doing all that stuff. You have to take a leap of faith sometimes, and I did it.
“I couldn’t even turn over in bed when I first came here, and as of three years ago, I can walk the track with no help – no cane, no nothing.”
Do you have any advice for people thinking about moving to Otterbein?
“There are different levels of assisted living. So if you’re at a high level of independence, it’s there for you, too. I’m at a pretty high level of independence, but I always know that someone’s here for me if I need it.
“It’s more of an attitude adjustment than anything. And the sooner you get involved when you get here, the better off you’ll be because there are so many things to do. I’ve been able to do anything that I want to do.
“Somehow, Otterbein makes a way for us to do that. If you have a passion for something, they’ll find something for you to do, any way that they can. You can’t beat it. I don’t think so. I’m just very happy.
“That’s the blessing of this place. There’s somebody here that’ll guide you and help you, and instill faith in you, and let you build your faith in them, too.”
