A New Paw-spective on Therapy
Emmy is a goldendoodle, or a mix of golden retriever and poodle. She is seven years old and has served as a pet therapy dog at Otterbein Franklin since she was about one. Emmy provides unconditional love and affection to residents, staff, and any others she meets.
Her owner, Otterbein Franklin Healthcare Navigator Crystal Huffman, says she gets excited when she arrives at the community.
“She runs into the building, visits all the residents in the lobby, and then she jumps on the counter because Brenda, our receptionist, gives her a treat every time she comes in,” said Crystal.
There’s a sense of peace and fulfillment in the community when Emmy’s around.
“Emmy lights up the room when she walks in. The residents are so excited. They love to see her. They visit with her,” said Crystal. “Some of them even carry treats around and wait for her to come by.”

How Pets Help Seniors Age Well
Research shows that pets help older adults feel socially connected, reducing loneliness and increasing happiness and life satisfaction.
Ken, an Otterbein Franklin, has built a special relationship with Emmy during her visits. Crystal explains that he checks in almost daily, asking whether Emmy is there, because he loves visiting her and feeding her treats — and she loves giving him attention.
“We have been real good friends, and she has meant a lot to me,” said Ken. “She seems to be getting along with me pretty well, too.”
Emmy empowers residents to open up and share more about their lives, and the Otterbein team appreciates all she does to enrich their lives here.
“It’s just really fun to see a different side of the residents and to learn more about them,” said Crystal. “And Emmy just provides a calming environment and allows for the residents to talk more about themselves.”
Ken further explains what Emmy means to him and how she makes him feel.
“As you can see, she’s pretty well relaxed, and she relaxes me at the same time,” said Ken. “Having Emmy here is like being home.”
